LAND PROTECTION PROGRAM: WILDLANDS, WILD WATERS

Forest Society of Maine – Support for the Society’s stewardship and monitoring of the Piscataquis River Preserve forever wild conservation easement in Atkinson, Milo, and Dover Foxcroft, Piscataquis County. This 2,750 acre preserve owned by Northeast Wilderness Trust forms part of the Piscataquis River/Alder Stream protected area, an approximately 20,000 acre mosaic of protected private and public lands recognized by the Maine Natural Areas program and The Nature Conservancy for its relatively unfragmented forest and pristine wetland and stream communities, the latter significant nurseries for Atlantic salmon and Eastern brook trout.
$20,000

Forest Society of Maine – A grant to help the Forest Society of Maine assess the status and conservation opportunities for old growth tracts not currently conserved in Maine’s North Woods. Conservation organizations active in Maine including Northeast Wilderness Trust, The Wilderness Society, The Nature Conservancy, and the Maine Natural Areas program, have identified the paucity of protected old growth forest in Maine. This grant is tied to the actual protection of a site of significant size and quality within the near future.
$15,000

Friends of the Nature Conservancy of Canada, Inc. – Support for the Nature Conservancy of Canada’s Appalachian Corridor project, protecting a corridor of ecologically significant lands running from the Canada/United States border north to Mount Sutton and Mount Orford. The grant will ensure the protection of an additional 1,000 acres in this now 24,000 acre protected area, over half of which, or 14,000 acres, have been conserved with Sweet Water Trust’s assistance. Parcels are subject to permanent conservation servitudes or are included in Quebec’s provincial Ecological Reserve system.
$250,000

Maine Community Foundation – A grant for a temporary advised fund that will support ongoing forever wild land protection projects in areas of Maine where Sweet Water Trust has already made substantial commitments.
$460,000

Northeast Wilderness Trust, VT – For support of Northeast Wilderness Trust’s program of protecting wilderness lands in the Northern Appalachians through fee acquisition and permanent conservation easements. This rare operations support recognizes Northeast Wilderness Trust’s key partnership in protecting large blocks of ecologically significant land in the North Woods as the only land trust in the Northeast dedicated exclusively to wildlands protection.
$100,000 as part of a multi-year pledge

Northeast Wilderness Trust, VT – Creation of an endowment for Northeast Wilderness Trust’s stewardship and monitoring of the forever wild conservation easement on the ~10,330 acre Vickie Bunnell Preserve in Coos County, New Hampshire, a protection project previously funded by Sweet Water Trust.
